Lighthouses of the Great Lakes

Lighthouses of the Great Lakes

Lighthouses have been a part of the Great Lakes maritime history ever since the early settlers moved westward and into the Upper Great Lakes region of the United States. Their light beams have guided ships to safety during the nastiest of storms, and at times the lighthouse keepers staged daring rescues that made them true heroes of the Great Lakes.

In recent years, lighthouses have become major tourist attractions, and restoration has seen them returned to their original splendor. Every year, thousands of visitors hear their heroic tales and listen to the eerie ghost stories that seem to go hand and hand with the isolation and solitude of life in a lighthouse.

Southport Video, producer of 17 videos of prominent shipwrecks, has just released a comprehensive look at lighthouses on the Great Lakes, from the history of lighthouses in general to close-up looks at some of the beautiful individual structures, all told through the voices of maritime authorities and augmented with rare photos, beautiful paintings, and footage of the lighthouses today.

Some of the stories are amazing. There is the tale of how a ship rammed into the Buffalo lighthouse, knocking it over to a precarious angle. Another recalls a terrible explosion at Stannard's Rock, resulting in the death of one man. Another speaks of the lighthouse at Whitefish Point, knocked out of service by the elements on the night that the mighty Edmund Fitzgerald met its fate. All told, it is a captivating and educational hour, certain to appeal to lighthouse enthusiasts everywhere.

Enjoy more than 20 legendary lighthouses featured in the program, including:
  • Split Rock, Two Harbors, MN
  • Cana Island, Door Co., WI
  • Marblehead, Sandusky, OH
  • Old Presque Isle, Lake Huron
  • Grosse Point, Evanston, IL
  • North Point, Milwaukee, WI
  • Apostle Islands, Lake Superior
  • Southport, Kenosha, WI
