The Wreck of The Edmund Fitzgerald

The Wreck of The Edmund
    Fitzgerald

On November 10, 1975, in the most famous shipwreck in Great Lakes history, the Edmund Fitzgerald sank in a treacherous storm on Lake Superior. Now in conjunction with its anniversary of the ship sinking, Southport Video Productions, a film company specializing in documentaries on shipwrecks and lighthouses, has released a new program titled The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

"This is by far our most detailed and comprehensive look at this ships's story," says Southport producer Mark C. Gumbinger, who produced and directed two earlier entries on the Edmund Fitzgerald.
"The wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald presents new interview material filmed for this program, with updated theories about what actually brought the Edmund Fitzgerald to the bottom of Lake Superior on that terrible, stormy night."

Thanks to the popular 1976 song by singer/songwriter Gordon Lightfoot, the story of the Edmund Fitzgerald has reached and maintained legendary status in Great Lakes maritime lore. The gigantic ore carrier, at one time the largest ship on the Great Lakes and holder of numerous tonnage records, was caught up in a vicious November storm on Lake Superior and, after hours of battling high winds and 30-foot waves, suddenly disappeared from radar without so much as a single warning or SOS from its captain or crew.

What happened that fateful night has been the subject of debate for more than a quarter of a century. The Fitzgerald came to rest in two pieces in deep frigid water, and authorities cannot even agree on whether the ship broke on the surface or whether it slammed into the floor of Lake Superior, not to mention the different and often conflicting theories.

The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald gives the details of the ship's final voyage, complete with details of its final minutes, the frantic search efforts that followed its sinking, and the Coast Guard's exhaustive investigation into the tragedy. The various theories about its sinking are explored by eleven Great Lakes maritime experts, including:

  • Captain Jim Wilson, who prepared the Coast Guard's 1977 Marine Board of Investigation report on the loss of the Fitzgerald;
  • Captain Jim Hobaugh, commander of one of the Coast Guard ships leading the search for the Fitzgerald immediately after its sinking;
  • Frederick Stonehouse, author of numerous books on Great Lakes shipwrecks (including the Fitzgerald); and
  • Thomas Holden, Army Corps of Engineers and Great Lakes historian.

The one-hour documentary features a wealth of rare photographs and paintings, historical footage of the launching of the Fitz, archival news clippings, computer graphics illustrating the sinking, and stunning underwater footage of the Fitzgerald, resting on the bottom of Lake Superior. Also included is a haunting radio transmission between the captain of the Arthur Anderson (a ship following the Fitzgerald and tracking its movements during the Fitz's final hours), and the Coast Guard Station. This captivating program is bound to please both shipwreck novices and longtime maritime enthusiasts.

EDMUND FITZGERALD: PAST AND PRESENT

EDMUND FITZGERALD: PAST AND PRESENT

We've invested thousands of hours in research to bring this program to you. Also included in this NEW long awaited sequel is captivating underwater footage with two separate expeditions to the wreck site at a depth of 530 feet.

When the Edmund Fitzgerald, a gigantic and thoroughly modern ore carrier, sank in Lake Superior during a fierce storm in November 1975, one of the biggest mysteries in Great Lakes maritime history was born.

How had the 729-foot vessel, known for its rugged durability, and piloted by one of the most respected and experienced captains on the lakes, gone down without so much as a call for help? What tremendous forces were responsible for its disappearing so suddenly and without a trace? What, exactly happened on Lake Superior that fateful night?

Since there were no survivors of this terrible tragedy, numerous theories abound regarding what caused the ship to sink. This completely new second production, "Edmund Fitzgerald: Past and Present," has a wealth of new information and remarkable rare footage. While the1993's popular "The Mystery of the Edmund Fitzgerald" video concentrated on the Fitzgerald's history and final voyage, the sequel explains the theories with authoritative, in-depth interviews. It's a great companion video.

Edmund Fitzgerald: Past and Present boasts a wealth of exclusive interviews, rare photographs, beautiful paintings and original artwork, archival news clippings, computer graphics, stunning underwater footage taken from two separate dives to the wreck--even the ship-to-shore radio communication from the ship following the Fitzgerald--all enhancing a compelling narrative that offers a comprehensive account of this famous shipwreck. Also included are accounts of recent Fitzgerald activities, including the retrieval of one of its anchors, lost in the Detroit River in 1974, and details of a 1995 return to the wreck, during which an engraved bell replaced the ship's original.
